Worst Song Ever?

Some time ago, I read Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs which is a must read for anybody who (a) likes good humor and (b) came of age while listening to Top 40 radio in the 70s and early 80s.

This book came about as the result of one of Dave's columns from many years prior in which he asked readers what the worst rock song ever was. He got more feedback on this one topic than he has ever gotten in response to a column and it continued long after the follow-up story ran. Years after. So he expanded the column into a short book.

I was reminded of this today as I was listening (audio books are your friend at work) to Dave Barry Is NOT Making This Up. This (earlier) book is mostly a collection of columns and one of the sections is about music. This includes not only the columns about the Worst Song survey, but also the beginnings of the Rock Bottom Remainders, the group he plays in (for charity) with other writers including (but not limited to) Steven King, Amy Tan, Roy Blount, Jr., Matt Groening and Mitch Albom. (To quote Dave, "We play music as well as Metallica writes novels.")

So, I thought it'd be fun to take my own Worst Song survey.

I'll kick it off with "Seasons In The Sun" by Terry Jacks, although "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes is waaaaaaay up there.

Oh - and it'd be nice if those who comment would register (I know, I know - get over it) so we can see who is posting. Besides, if I start getting comment spam I may have to limit comments to registered users anyway.

Re: Worst Song Ever?

I would have to vote for "Ain't no sunshine." My very favorite passage from that song would of course be: And I know, I know, I know, I know, I know I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know Ah, sheer poetry.
